about

“The wreckage of stars - I built a world from this wreckage.”

― Friedrich Nietzsche

"Nucleus" emerged out of live hardware jams in Stephen Hummel’s "subtractiveLAB" studio. Feeling the need to approach his music creation in a more tactile way, “Nucleus” was composed almost completely using hardware instruments, sequencers and effects, including a barrage of analogue synthesizers, an MPC and various stomp-boxes. The album explores new sonic territory for the subtractiveLAD project, while representing an emphatic return to the IDM/classic analogue fusion that originally defined the subtractiveLAD sound. Listeners following subtractiveLAD’s journey over the past decade will find the familiar strong emotional core inside music made from wires and machines.

These mixes are the high-res masters and FLAC listeners will enjoy 88.2 kHz / 24 bit fidelity.

"...balancing more melodic and delicate elements with a darker undercurrent, without allowing either of these sides to subsume the other and detract from the sense of emotional pull."

about

Stephen Hummel Vancouver, British Columbia

Music has always been a central part of my life. Over the years, as I have developed as an artist, my music has become the primary filter through which I process my experiences and emotions. My creative approach is to use the recording studio as an instrument of expression - to use technology as an extension of physical performance. Improvisation is always a core part of my creative process. ... more
